Steve Moss

President

Steve has worked as a self-employed technical communicator since 1988. He trained as a mechanical engineer in the UK and has extensive experience in the computer industry in software support, development and training. Steve is an Information Mapping® certified trainer and is particularly interested in editing and the development of online learning material.

He is a senior member of STC and developed this website in his "spare" time with assistance from other members of the Committee. Steve is based in Auckland. Contact phone number: (09) 846-5133.

Emily Cotlier

Vice President

Emily Cotlier is a Senior Technical Author with the Wellington R&D location of Harris Stratex Networks, Inc. With a Master’s degree in Scientific and Technical Communication from Drexel University, she has 15 years of experience in IT, scientific, and engineering communications.

For the past five years, managing localizations and translations has been part of her work as a technical communicator.

Kaye Churches

Secretary

Kaye is based in Christchurch and currently works for AMI Insurance as Intranet Content Manager. Her extensive experience is primarily in developing user-centred software documentation and she has worked in a number of software organisations in Christchurch. Her previous role with Airways Corporation extends into business analysis and moving the company intranet towards a rich information and user-centric tool rather than just a phone book. Kaye has a special interest in usability and in delivering websites and documentation that meet the need for simplicity and conciseness in our information overloaded world. Kaye has been involved in TCANZ conference organisation for the last two conferences and is keen to see the organisation grow and develop with full participation from our exciting industry. Kaye is an avid Crusaders supporter.

Roy McKone

Business Manager

Roy has been a self employed technical communicator since the beginning of 1998. Prior to this he has had substantial experience in the IT industry in management, sales, solution design, software development and technical roles. During his career Roy has also had to develop a wide range of documentation from technical through to sales proposals.

Combining these various skills and experiences with formal training in Information Mapping®, Roy has since been involved in a number of major documentation projects. Roy is based in Auckland.

Luke Pivac

Committee member

Luke started his career in technical communication at marine electronics giant Navico, before moving to global leaders in Health IT; iSOFT.

Luke now works as a technical writer (within a team of technical writers) in the network monitoring industry; he enjoys the challenges of working in a team bring to technical communication.

Luke is a Technical Communication and Information Management graduate. He gained the qualifications at the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand and understands the challenges and benefits of part-time long-distance learning.

Prior to Luke’s technical communication career, he worked in the television industry at TVNZ and also the department of Film, TV and Media Studies at the University of Auckland. It was during this time that Luke developed his technical communication skills, especially in writing for technology.

Peter Russell

Committee member

Peter is based in Wellington with the Department of Corrections Prison Services, focusing on policies, procedures, instructions and guidelines for prison staff and, occasionally, prisoners. This follows a varied career that started with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, advising the horticulture industry, then branched out into correspondence tutoring, small-organisation administration and scientific editing and writing. Throughout the 1990s Peter was self employed, with most clients in the transport sector, the largest being NZ Rail (later Tranz Rail, Toll Rail and now Kiwi Rail).

Following this, Peter spent time developing vehicle inspections requirements manuals for the LTSA and Land Transport New Zealand (now the New Zealand Transport Agency), before nearly two years with Inland Revenue's ministerials unit. Peter believes that a technical communicator is someone who is quick to grasp new technical subject matter and competent to communicate it authoritatively and appropriately to a fresh audience.
