Editing and Plain English Group - February 13

Topic: Shock! Horror! Probe! - the craft of subediting tabloids

With the wealth of information channels around these days, the traditional print medium faces stiff competition.  But one form, the tabloid newspaper, is still putting up a spirited fight and pulling in the punters.  According to Jim Mahoney, this is because it suits the mass of people who want information immediately but are not particularly literate.  A tabloid subeditor knows, above all else, how to make copy active, give it pace and write a punchy headline.

About the presenter

Jim Mahoney is very experienced in the news business.  Jim has been a newspaper proprietor (of Northwestbrief, now Northwest News); editor (of NZ Truth, Northland Times and Australian Printer Magazine); and chief subeditor (of National Business Review and Sunday News).  Now he is a senior subeditor for Fairfax Editorial Services.

He began as a sportswriter and still has a loyal audience as a fishing columnist and boxing commentator on TV.
