Annual Salary Survey Results

March 2016

Thanks to the 137 TechCommNZ members and non-members who took the opportunity to complete the TechCommNZ Annual Salary Survey. Denise Grealish, a senior research and evaluation analyst working in the government sector, has once again kindly collated the raw data for us. The full survey is only available to TechCommNZ members, who need to log in to the site to access the Member Area and Survey.

Here are a few of the survey findings:

  • 18% of salaried respondents are the only technical communicator in their organisation (down from 20% in 2014 and 23% in 2013).
  • 67% have had a pay rise in the last 12 months (compared with 58% in 2014 and 72% in 2013).
  • Delivery to mobile devices is increasingly important, with 62% saying it is very/somewhat important (an increase from 52% in 2014). Web-based delivery continues to be important to nearly all (87%) and cloud-based delivery is important to about half (47%)..
  • Fewer people attended training courses in 2015 (54%) than in 2014 (69%).
  • More salaried employees are working longer hours (74% worked more than 40 hours per week compared to 60% in 2014).

Is non-TC subject-matter expertise valued?

We included a new question this year, because we wanted to find out whether people receive a higher salary if they are valuable to an organisation not just as expert technical communicators, but also as subject matter experts in their industry or technology. Take a look at the results and consider your own value-add.
