From the Bloggers

October 2016

In recent blogs, Tyson Barnett has been opening the eyes of Hamilton students to the joys of TC (and the chance to play Pokémon Go), and Emma Reynolds reports on what she learnt about other people at a branch event in Christchurch.

Tyson Barnett of Gallagher in Hamilton reports on explaining technical communication to a second year communication class at WINTEC. Talk about cunning – he seized their attention with "Pokémon", then followed up by describing the cool stuff we have to learn as part of our job. Good on Tyson for spreading the word to students looking for a rewarding career. In July, the Christchurch branch of TechCommNZ hosted Ross Denton, an engaging speaker and management coach. "Why do people drive you mad at work?" seemed like an attention-grabbing subject, and so it proved. We learned why we should not treat others as you want to be treated, and why we should face the fact that 75% of people do not see the world the way we do. Emma Reynolds has summarised it but you can also find the link to the recording in Christchurch Branch Report: Getting Along – Advice for Working with People.
