Carin van Bolderin's report on the Christchurch branch's field trip to the Canterbury Health System Design Lab shows just how intrigued and delighted she was by this event. "Richard showed us mocked up cardboard wards that incorporate angled parking for beds pointing towards a nursing station; a pod-like overhead shell for each bed that reduce noise and provide a feeling of privacy; and design layouts with specific movement flows for staff, doctors, and visitors… The features were innovative, clever, and somehow very obvious. Why has it taken so long to get to here?"
Another guest blogger, Frik de Beer, contributed a very interesting insight into technical communication's not-so-murky past with his recent blog Prettifying typist or information creator? It is fascinating to read of the different methods and people involved in putting together export-quality documentation when Frik started out in technical communication. He was intentionally being rather provocative when he asked " ...have too many of us become typists who just pretty it all up? Reasonably good at using a range of tools to make low-quality writing look OK..." This deserves a response! Take a look and then leave your thoughts in the Comments.
